IRL Chicago review
Been a while since posting here, but nothing particularly exciting seems to have happened in the sporting world. Yeah ok - there's the Ashes and to be fair that showed everything great about sport - close competition, will to win, skill, power etc etc - but it's still cricket and i couldn't muster up any enthusiasm to write about it.
More importantly, I was very excited watching the IRL race from Chicago this past weekend (BBC Sport). Fantastic win for Dan Wheldon which more or less wins him the championship barring accident before the next race - and a close finish to only 6 1/1000ths in it. Although if it hadnt been for a late race caution he would have won by half a lap.
Of course the big event was really the horrific crash involving Ryan Briscoe. Here's some pictures of it - Ten-tenths forum. As has been said a thousand times already, it's a real tribute to the safety features in the cars that he's still around to talk about it.
One thing that disappointed me was the way the US commentary team covered the medical reports for Ryan. The way they were talking they made it sound like the extent of his injuries were scratched thumb and a bruised pride - but actually I would call two broken collarbones and whatever else quite serious - not life threatening sure - but still worthy of a bit more than "Ryan's ok". Oh well, he's fine and that's the main thing.
